Underground House, Hardcore and Techno were a key launching pad into a 30 year love affair with Jungle and Drum and Bass. In 1994, whilst studying History of Art and Italian at the University of Birmingham, she founded a newspaper column at the university to explore drum and bass. A Short History of Drum and Bass

Drum and bass, often shortened to DnB or D&B, emerged as an electrifying genre within the electronic dance music landscape, characterized by its rapid breakbeats, typically ranging from 165 to 185 beats per minute, complemented by deep basslines, intricate samples, and synthesizer melodies. Originating from the vibrant jungle scene of the United Kingdom during the 1990s, drum and bass quickly gained traction among enthusiasts of the rave culture.

Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Jamaican dub and reggae, drum and bass inherited a bass-heavy sound that reverberated through its compositions. Notably, the genre showcased complex syncopation in its drum tracks, creating a distinctive rhythmic appeal. Over time, drum and bass diversified into various subgenres, including breakcore, ragga jungle, hardstep, darkstep, techstep, neurofunk, and more, each offering a unique sonic experience.

While initially overlooked by major international labels, drum and bass witnessed a turning point when BMG Rights Management acquired RAM in 2016, leading to increased exposure and recognition for the genre. Despite its roots in the UK, drum and bass resonated globally, captivating audiences across different continents.

The evolution of drum and bass was marked by experimentation and innovation, with producers constantly pushing boundaries and incorporating influences from diverse musical genres such as hip hop, dubstep, house, and jazz. As the genre evolved, it gave rise to subgenres like liquid funk, jump up, drumfunk, and sambass, each contributing to the genre's rich tapestry.

Over the years, drum and bass transitioned from underground clubs to mainstream acceptance, garnering widespread popularity and influencing subsequent genres like grime and dubstep. With artists like Chase & Status, Netsky, Metrik, and Pendulum making significant contributions, drum and bass continued to thrive, captivating audiences and earning its place in the annals of electronic music history.

In the 2020s, drum and bass experienced a resurgence, with a new generation of enthusiasts embracing its energetic rhythms and diverse sonic palette, signaling a continued affinity for the genre in contemporary music culture.
